General
The optical transceiver is compliant withthe SmallForm- Factor Pluggable (SFP) Multi-
SourceAgreement(MSA).It is specificallydesignedfor robust performancein the presence
ofSDIpathologicalpatternsfor SMPTE259M,SMPTE292MandSMPTE424Mserialrates. It
offerspreviouslyunavailablesystemcost,upgrade,andreliability benefitsbyvirtueofbeing
hot-pluggable.
Transmitter TransmitterSection:
Transmitteris designedforsinglemodefiberandoperatesatanominalwavelengthof
1550nm.Thetransmitter moduleusesaMQWFPlaser diodeandfull IEC825 andCDRH
class1eyesafety.TheoutputpowercanbedisabledviathesingleTxDispin.LogicLVTTL
HIGHlevel disablesthetransmitter.ItcontainsAPCfunction, temperaturecompensation
circuit,PECLdatainputs, LVTTLTxdisinput andTxfault Outputinterface.
ReceiverSection:
Thereceiversectionusesahermeticpackagedfront endreceiver(InGaAsPINand
preamplifier).Thepostamplifieris ACcoupledtopreamplifierthroughacapacitorandalow
passfilter. ThecapacitorandLPFareenoughtopassthesignalfrom5Mb/sto3000Mb/s
withoutsignificantdistortionorperformancepenalty.TheLPFlimits thepreamplifier
bandwidthtoimprove receiversensitivity.Astheinput opticalis decreased,LOSwillswitch
fromlow tohigh.Astheinput opticalpoweris increased fromverylow levels, LOSwill
switchbackfromhightolow.
EEPROMSection:
TheopticaltransceivercontainsanEEPROM.Itprovidesaccesstosophisticatedidentification
information thatdescribesthetransceiver’scapabilities,standardinterfaces, manufacturer,
andotherinformation.
Theserialinterface usesthe2-wireserialCMOSEEPROMprotocoldefinedfortheATMEL
AT24C01A/02/04family ofcomponents.Whentheserialprotocolis activated,thehost
generatestheserialclocksignal(SCL,ModDef1).Thepositiveedgeclocksdatainto those
segmentsoftheEEPROMthatarenotwriteprotectedwithintheSFPtransceiver.The
negativeedgeclocksdatafromtheSFPtransceiver.Theserialdatasignal(SDA,ModDef2)
is bi-directionalforserialdatatransfer.ThehostusesSDAin conjunctionwithSCLtomark
thestartandendofserialprotocolactivation.Thememoriesareorganizedasaseriesof8-
bitdatawordsthatcanbeaddressedindividually orsequentially.
